To many McCain seems to be sending mixed messages. The economy is fundamentally sound; the economy is in crisis. This is the best of times; this is the worst of times. This has hurt him this week. The irony is that he is RIGHT. He has just not done a good job of explaining himself. The economy is not a single thing and the fundamentals that are sound go beyond just the workforce.
